Tree doesn't believe in that 'theatrical harness' stuff. He always takes the condemned to the gallows naked so the witnesses know she will feel the noose.

Yeah, some even act brave when they are noosed but not yet hanged...

But it is not acting once she is hanging by her neck...

The lever is pulled and the condemned prisoner drops only three feet. It tightens the noose around her neck enough the prisoner is hanged but not enough to kill her. The warden asks "How long will it take to kill her?"
Joan looks at the prisoner thrashing as she hangs by her neck.

"She could last ten minutes before she strangles. She'll wish she was dead long before then..."
