I recently read that the bones of another crucified man had been found in Britain. Reportedly, only the fourth such remains found around the world. His heel bone had a nail through it, just like another found in Israel. It seems this may have been the most usual and easiest way to crucify: nails through wrists (presumably) and the heel bone to the side of the upright. The upright would remain fixed in the ground and the crossbeam raised upon it.

Various artists have images like this (with women, of course). Heels against the front of the upright would maximize exposure.

I stumbled over the issue, when I was doing some research concerning uncontrolable erections during executions. I'm not a physician and was astonished about what I was reading.

The article stated, when men get hanged, the blood will sink into the lower body parts and they will have an erect Penis until they are taken down. The genitals of women are stimulated similar, though not visible.

Furthermore the Author was saying that during a crucifixion people also experienced involuntary erections, here while still being alive. The uncontrolled stimulation due to the swollen genitals must be horrible. Just try to imagine, no way to get relief.

There is, according to this article, medieval paintings that show the crucified Jesus with erect Penis. Even though that in spiritual paintings the condemned have a loincloth, the involuntary erection on the cross must have been subject of discussion while these pictures were painted.

Think about it what all these condemned, as here in the story the criminals Andrea and Cire, experienced during their execution.

Hi Marcella,

to me it's the sum of the little personal things that the victims must experience, that makes the crucifixion a special form of execution. The arrival, when the victim is confronted with it's Stipes for the first time, with eventually other victims that watch the arrival from their crosses while the crowd is cheering and laughing, may be one of these very important moments.

Yes! I think about this ALL the time... The moment when your execution becomes real, not some far-off imagined thing! One of the best scenes of this, in my opinion, was done by @Wragg and Repertor in The Story of Jasmine.

If one is tied to the cross and not nailed, there always remains a slight hope of surviving, of experiencing mercy, of being taken down from the cross....

When they nail you to the cross, you know where you stand. You will die on that piece of rotten wood.

Nails seem to transport the feeling of "final" much better than ropes. The slight hope of surviving is an issue to a lot of people, but I wasn't thinking about it in the moment when we arrived at the execution site.

To me it was more: - Hell, we made it. We really carried the crossbeams to the execution site. Let me check out these slaves to get an idea how they will execute us -

It was my anticipation that the execution team then destroyed whith their further actions. At that point I realized that I loose control, not just over my body, but also over my emotions. That fact almost got me fainting when I stood there naked in front of the hooting, laughing crowd.

Yes of course, me and Andrea are criminals and may deserve the death. But criminals or not, guilty or not, right there I understood that I have absolutely no idea what to expect.......:eek:
