They didn't burn very well...
Human body never does on poor caloric sources, like natural wooden logs. Too much water. I've had the unfortunate occasion (in my professional life) to watch pictures of human remains from house fires, exposed to intense heat, way above what can be achieved by the meager campfires in my illustration refered and they seldom burn beyond recognition, retaining general shape (without hair or eyes, of course). One would need a incinerator based on high-caloric burning gas to calcify everything to the bone.
