Jedakk's Masterpiece

For Sabina, every move she makes can result in sudden stabbing pain. She has to raise herself on the cross so that she can breathe and try to relieve some of the burning pain in her wrists. Later she will avail herself of the cornu's horn to try to rest on, but that won't happen until she's so desperate that she has no choice. Right not, she doesn't want that cornu inside of her and she's doing all she can to avoid it. Julia Lepida describes the sight of Sabina trying to avoid the cornu:

Easing her buttocks back toward the post, the point of the horn slid along her cleft as she spread her legs further and carefully tried to straddle it without letting it enter her. That would come later, when her desperation to escape the agony drove her to pay its price for whatever relief it offered. When the point touched her sensitive inner lips, she shuddered and jerked, moaning at the stab of pain in her wounds the sudden movement caused. I felt a shudder run through me as well, despite my efforts to be a Roman domina and pretend I was not affected.

There was a murmur from the crowd and I heard some of the men making bets as to whether she would take it up her podex or cunnus, while others said no, a bit more time, she’s not ready yet. For a man condemned to die on the cross, there was only one place the horn could fit when agony and the fight to breathe forced him to rest his weight on it. But a woman could choose to be violated in either of two places, both of which would be painful and humiliating. And her choice would be clearly visible to the onlookers as the horn entered her.
The torment gets more delicious with every episode. And is it me, or is Julia Lepida off-the-charts hot? I know I can go and read the whole thing, but I'm savouring it like this. Thanks Jedakk

I do wish to mention that downloading your epic took me a long time as I get only 1mB download and I 'opened' it instead of 'downloading' it. So I only read it quickly and must admit my focus was far more on your art so I have enjoyed your revisiting of the story!

T
Yeah, it is a big file, and I guess I am spoiled to high download speeds. I could have made the file size smaller, but the picture quality would have gone down. I really wanted readers to be able to see the illustrations the way that I saw them on my screen. So the trade-off was an enormous PDF file.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder! Julia Lepida is supposed to be hot. I did a lot of work on her before I put that dress on, trying to get her proportions, face, etc. just right to suit my eye. One of the more difficult parts was painting that black eye she has. Glad you like her!

This was great the first time, although I know you were disappointed by the response.
It's equally great the second time around, narative and picture creating a vivid and very real story for us to inhabit.

Clearly visible. That is one of the keys to the crux experience. The whole ordeal, every effort and every pain, every decision and every act, is played out in public.

Exactly! The opposite would be if she was crucified in a dungeon with only one or two torturers around to see her naked, watch her writhe, hear her screams of agony. The pain might be the same, but the level of humiliation would be different without all of the onlookers and passers-by to watch her, jeer and laugh at her as she suffered. It's all about the humiliating public display. I keep quoting Balbus about this, which if course is really me talking since I wrote it:

“It’s a public execution,” I said, almost shouting to make myself heard over all the screaming and hammering. “What matters is what the public sees and how long it lasts.” I gestured at the crowd, “These cocksuckers can’t see how much it hurts, and these crowbait on their crosses are already screaming as loud as they can, so how would they know if we made it worse? Anything we do to make the pain worse doesn’t show, it only makes these assholes die sooner.”

It was a long, slow display of punishment that people who passed by that way would see for days, and every time they saw her they'd register the sight of the naked victim struggling in agony. They'd notice that she was getting weaker, but very slowly. And if any of them had any thoughts of entering into a life of crime, they'd clearly understand that they could just as well end up on a cross just like this one.

Sabina has pushed herself up higher on the cross, an agonizing struggle that aggravated the pain in her wrists and feet as it caused her wounds to twist around the big nails that impale them. Now she's managed to get above the cornu and get it between her legs beneath her. She can't maintain this position for long, not with her knees bent, but she needs a break from her struggle and a chance to catch her breath.

Julia Lepida describes it like this:

Her head was turned to the side, eyes open. She stared at the nail head protruding from one of her wrists as if she had just discovered it there. Lost in her anguish, her breaths came in deep, ragged groans of agony as she took advantage of the precious few moments she would have when each breath did not require an effort. Her neck was extended and bent back as if the air she desperately wanted was just out of reach.

She's gulping air desperately, hyperventilating, and she might faint.

It is so relentless, I can feel her agony, I can feel her anguish!
She cannot believe she is here, but the pain makes it very real to her!

Every time I look at these pictures I notice some detail that I had previously missed. This time it was the wood-grain across the end of the patibulum; beautifully done and with such an eye for perfection. Awesome series, truly a masterpiece.

I agree - it must seem surreal to the victim, having someone do all of this to you. You could be severely injured in an accident and suffer agony from that, and maybe something could happen that would be really humiliating - lock yourself out of your house naked or something. That would be accidental and maybe no one's fault.

But in crucifixion, it's all official, with people carrying out your punishment in a very organized way with the express intent that you will be humiliated in the worst way possible, and that you will suffer the worst pain that they can inflict. And then they will carefully keep you alive, humiliated and in agony, until the last drop of your strength drains away and your body is an empty shell.

Simply being forced to hang suspended like that for a long period of time would feel alien. Add to that being naked and exposed in public - you're no longer deemed to deserve the dignity of even the least amount of covering during your punishment. And then add horrific agony from iron spikes that impale your wrists and feet so that they cannot move. And then on top of that, every breath takes work. Even the air you breathe takes a little of your strength with each breath. And further add that if you were injured like this and needed help, people would be rushing to try to help you. But now that you've been condemned to die on the cross, they only watch you struggle and writhe and suffer, some even laughing and jeering at you.

It's like your whole world turned upside down and you can't help but wonder how this could happen.

The detail I like best is displicuit correctly taking the dative, dominae -
mihi placet! :)

That end grain came from an old piece of wood I had in my back yard. I grabbed a square out of the picture I took of it and used that for the 3D beam's texture.

There are an awful lot of small details like that which I've spent time working on over the years so that now I can use them whenever I want to.

I'm writing a new short story right now - at least I hope it's short. For an illustration I created a crux scene with a victim, cross, environment and five highly detailed onlookers in less than an hour last night because I have so many pieces already created that I can pull out and use with minor modifications to fit the scene.

I have to thank Dr. Mabuse, an old member of the Foundation, for his Latin expertise on that one! I really wanted it to be right so I went to someone whom I knew to be knowledgeable. He has a very interesting website - The Crypt - http://krypta.i24.cc/ - dedicated to female Christian martyrs.

I have appreciated this review of your story and hope you do not tire of posting.

Truly there is a juxtaposition of life and living while dying

Yes, for us this is especially shocking. We live in a society that has spent decades trying to eliminate pain and distress, that has created structures to save us from nature and the consequences of our foolish actions. Punishment has to be measured and restrained.
There is nothing restrained about crucifixion, it is the very deliberate and methodical application of pain and humiliation as a punishment and a warning. The victim is damaged irreversibly, scarred mentally, shamed publicly. The victim suffers knowing they are surrounded by people who could help, but won't. Some may even be neighbours or family.

Yes, the Crypt is well worth a visit. Since I was a kid I've been fascinated by virgin martyrs,
and fancy I know a fair amount about them, but Dr Mabuse, and Zephyros here, have taught me a lot more!

Ok, Eulalia, you know a lot more Latin than I do. I need some help! And any others who are good in Latin are welcome to jump in on this one. Here's the problem:

In the new story I'm writing, my main character is being executed because she cursed her master. I need a titulus that will reflect that crime. I thought I had one among all the old tituli I have lying around here, but looking at it now I don't think the wording can be right. It says "malum imprecate" which I think is more like "evil curse", not sure. I think it should be something like "Domino" (the Latin singular dative for "master") followed by a Latin verb for "she cursed". It seems there are many verbs for "curse" and I'm not sure which would be appropriate.

Anyway, can I get some help on this?
