22nd November - Saint Cecilia

She is reasonably certain to be a historical martyr, who probably perished in Sicily under Emperor Marcus Aurelius between 176 and 180, though her legend is hardly historical.

According to the story, despite her vow of virginity, she was forced by her parents to marry a nobleman named Valerian. During the wedding, Cecilia sat apart singing to God in her heart, and for that she later became venerated as the patron saint of musicians. When the time came for her marriage to be consummated, Cecilia told Valerian that she had an angel of the Lord watching over her who would punish him if he dared to violate her virginity but who would love him if he could respect her maidenhood. When Valerian asked to see the angel, Cecilia replied that he would see the angel if he would go to the third milestone on the the Appian Way and be baptized by Pope Urbanus. After his baptism, he found an angel standing by the side of Cecilia, and crowning her with a chaplet of roses and lilies.

The martyrdom of Cecilia is said to have followed that of Valerian and his brother by the prefect Turcius Almachius. The legend about Cecilia’s death says that after being struck three times on the neck with a sword, she lived for three days, and asked the pope to convert her home into a church, traditionally this is Santa Cecilia in Trastevere in Rome, which was first built in the 4th century; incorrupt remains supposed to be hers were found there in the 9th century.

Holidays and observances[edit]

It's an odd one that, isn't it? It's the only one I've come across that shows St Cat being tortured in one of the other ways they tried on her, other than the famous Wheel. It's a 15th century manuscript illumination by the very up-market Limbourg brothers, and they portrayed women like that pretty regularly, maybe women in those days were pregnant so much of the time, they'd forgotten what we look like when we aren't! :p

Fertility was a highly esteemed quality of women during the Middle Ages. Therefore women were often depicted as being pregnant. In Van Eyck's "Marriage of Arnolfini", the bride simulates pregnancy in her pose, as a sign that she is healthy and fertile.

The last Thursday in November is "Thanksgiving Day" in the US. So unlike my rather irrelevant  irreverent thread where we cook our girls I offer a moment of thanks for the good things in my life...

My wife, a 12 year cancer survivor...

My friends and with CF they span the globe...

To the higher power... I call him 'God' (call him/her/it what you will) for the life I have had and maybe much more to come...

Health and happiness to you all...

Yes, we have much to be thankful for.
Happy Thanksgiving to our American friends :)

(do you wish each other happy thanksgiving? I don't know the conventions)

At the very least:cool:. And while I think it is a mostly American holiday it is a day of thanks and sharing so I wish to share my thanks for all of you and hope in this this seemingly troubled world we can all take a moment to look about and as what is good in our lives and smile...

Canadians celebrate their own Thanksgiving on the second Monday in October.

So, a belated Happy Thanksgiving to our Canadian friends!:)

The modern US Thanksgiving is a day to eat heavily, watch football and - in recent years - go shopping.
It is also, for some, a time to gather together with relatives & be thankful you don't have to see them for another 364 days.:D

The first thanksgiving in North America was celebrated in St Augustine, Florida on September 8, 1565. So, stuff it, Pilgrims.:p
