It was a rather rare form of torture, but it was there, especially for crimes of betrayal of the fatherland or high treason. But Charlotte is not lenient... not even with thieving women

KNIVES AND SAW
Berta and Bice were dragged to the center of the Torture Square, that area of the Market Square designated for capital executions, where poor Catherine had been tortured to death on the Wheel. Today it was the turn of the two sisters, the real thieves. The gallows to which they were tied (the same for both girls) were two simple large poles driven into the ground, topped by a third pole tied to the other two. They were two gallows side by side, placed in front of the Counts' armchairs, so that they could enjoy the macabre show. Behind them was the audience, an enormous crowd that had also come from nearby towns because it was not an everyday thing to witness the torture to death of two young and beautiful women. The two sisters were in the grip of absolute terror... they were shaking and letting themselves be dragged. Berta was tied upside down and Bice next to her but in a normal vertical position. Bice could see, hear her sister... and the torture was about to begin. They would begin by cutting Berta with the saw, obviously from her most intimate, tender and painful parts, then it would be Bice's turn to be flayed alive. This was the reason why she had been tied upside down, so that the work of the two executioners would be more incisive and cruel…. Charlotte raised a hand and gave the go-ahead to the massacre.

Perhaps poor Bice watches in terror as the executioner carefully sharpens his knives in front of her to ensure they can cleanly cut through her skin.
These other tools are shown to Bice, they will be used to tear off her skin
