(a new story)
France, period of the Sun King (Louis XIV) and the transfer of the Court to the Palace of Versailles (after 1682). The Sun King was married to Maria Theresa of Habsburg who died in 1683. He was a charming man and one of the most powerful Kings of the time. He had many lovers, he had them until the end of his long life. Our story wants to tell the terrible story of the fight between two of his lovers to be the King's favorite. Our two main interpreters are two noblewomen who lived at Court, as Ladies in Waiting to the Queen: Baroness Anne and Countess Luise. This is the story of their fight for power…

THE “SUN KING” AND HIS LOVERS
To begin our story, we need to briefly outline the historical period. I do not intend to write a treatise (this story is the fruit of my fantasy), but only to tell some facts from which the entire narrative arises. Louis XIV of Bourbon, better known at the time as the Sun King, was the most powerful monarch in Europe between the 17th and 18th centuries. He built the Palace of Versailles and moved the court there from the Louvre Palace in Paris, then seat of the monarchy. He was a handsome man for his time, extremely attached to his mother, Anne of Austria. He had a brother, Philip Duke of Orleans. He married Maria Teresa of Habsburg and had several children, none of whom succeeded him upon his death (Louis XV was in fact his great-nephew, and ascended the throne at just 5 years old, albeit under regency until he came of age). Louis XIV expanded the kingdom of France to the point of incorporating a good part of Spain, after the end of the Thirty Years' War. Louis XIV retired to live in Versailles with his wife, children and his court. Unfortunately his wife died only one year after arriving in Versailles. The Sun King, who was an incurable womanizer, took advantage of his widowhood to build a personal harem of women lovers, of all kinds and levels, from servants forced to fulfill his every order to noblewomen who were practically treated by him at the same level as servants. But being the King's favorite gave power, so noblewomen were eager to become "property" of the King... In this context two noblewomen, Countess Luise de Favras and Baroness Anne de Poitiers, who had both been Ladies in Waiting to the Queen until her death, almost as friends, found themselves in the situation of fighting each other to obtain the "title" of King's Favorite...

Anna was the most uninhibited and cunning of all the noblewomen of the Palace. She had earned the nickname of “The King’s Whore” among the nobility of Versailles… and it was no coincidence. "Someone saw her with a dagger, and someone else heard her speaking Spanish... My King, be careful that she is not a spy and wants to harm you!!" "What you are telling me, if it is true, is very serious!! The King orders an immediate search of the Baroness's apartment!!" he ordered his most faithful soldiers. And so it was that the beautiful and young Anna was suddenly considered by the Sun King as a threat, a traitor, a spy. No longer his favorite lover but a Spanish spy at the court of Versailles, perhaps even a hitman who had orders to kill him... The plan devised by Louise to get rid of her rival was a perfect success (Louise was ruthless and unscrupulous) and was based on the King's fear of being assassinated, and on his fear of death.
[In reality Louis XIV lived a long time, up to 77 years old and died of gout; he was the last of his family, after having witnessed the death of his brother and his own children]
From the Sun King's conversation with Countess Louise to the subsequent discovery of the dagger in the apartments of Baroness Anna, only a few days passed before measures were taken against the spy. One night Anna, while she was sleeping, suddenly found soldiers in her bedroom, who gagged her, tied her up and blindfolded her. Then, without making too much noise, Baroness Anna was taken away, in a completely closed carriage that was waiting for her just outside the walls of Versailles. There rough and violent hands stripped her naked, and the hermetically sealed carriage left for Paris, to take Anna to the dungeons of the Louvre Palace. Officially nothing more would be heard of her, but her atrocious fate deserves to be told, also because for the Sun King she was a traitor and a spy and had to die, but only after having revealed - forced to confess with every kind of torture - who her accomplices were and the nature of her mission. Countess Louise had no intention of missing the spectacle of the tortures that would be inflicted on her rival... and Louise was eager to see her suffer, for a long time. And maybe take part in the work of the executioners, why not... the Sun King had allowed her to do what she wanted with Anna, but the King wanted to know what her plan really was and who her accomplices were... Louise felt that she would have liked to hurt Anna …she was innocent but no one would ever believe her…

Yes, a beautiful whipping is always the best way to begin, and imho a perfect daily ritual for her as well! A tortured noble should be whipped every day to remind her of her fallen place in hierarchy, from admired courtesan to lowly condemned slave… Kept in bondage, the lash will keep her focused upon her utter humiliation which will hurt her far more than any of the approaching torture she must now endure… Let her suffer for her horrible betrayal of the king and wallow in the self-pity of her inexcusable innocence.
