Epica are an amazing Dutch symphonic metal band, in a similar style to Nightwish, also feating a gorgeous female (and currently redhead) singer (Simone Simons). They've been around since 2002 and this is their most recent single - "Ghost In Me (Danse Macabre)", released a couple of months back, just in time for Halloween;

Simone has also done some solo work, like this collaboration with Canadian singer Alissa White-Gluz, best known as lead singer of the Swedish metal band Arch Enemy.

This is "Cradle To The Grave";

Seriously these two girls are definitely ticking my boxes today :p

It's good that you reminded me about Epica) Several years ago, I tried to listen to their discography. Here I should explain that I am quite pedantic in listening to music. If I want to get to know some artist or group that is new to me, I methodically listen to all their studio albums in order from beginning to end. And only after that I decide whether to continue listening to it or not. But as for Epica... I listened to their debut album, and, it seems, half of the second album... and I somehow lost the desire to listen further. Their music seemed too cumbersome and overloaded to me, even by the standards of syphonic metal) Of course, this is my subjective impression. Perhaps, in the near future, I will try to storm their discography again)
If we talk specifically about Dutch symphonic metal, then the only group that impressed me at one time was Within Temptation. Unfortunately, in recent years they have changed their genre direction significantly, and have become TOO MUCH interested in politics.
You mentioned Nightwish... Their new album, released a few months ago, seemed to me, again, too cumbersome and almost devoid of dynamics. Unfortunately, this is apparently the current direction of Mr. Holopainen's work. Of course, he does what he likes, it is his right, but still, it is somehow difficult to call it Nightwish. I would say that it is more reminiscent of his solo work with guest vocalists, and not the Nightwish that we knew and loved...

NEVER a good plan - as soon as you get political, you instantly alienate half your audience :(

well to be fair, their latest album is a good bit better than the previous one :)

I really love Nightwish but I will admit that the last few albums have not reached the gigh standards of their earlier work. Dark Passion Play and Imaginaerum are among their very best albums (despite the fact that Anette Olsen is my least favourite of their lead singers - these are still some of the best composition and songwriting efforts in their entire catalogue)

I think it's fair to say that Nightwish's best times are behind them now. In particular, the departure of Marko has been a significant blow to the band as a whole. They're still awesome, but maybe not quite as awesome as they once were :(

J. S. Bach - Und es waren Hirten from Christmas Oratorio BWV 248
Merry Christmas!
In fact, Cantata 2, which was composed to be performed today, the 26th - thanks for posting it, a lovely performance.

Bach was always upbeat and cheerful sounding most times.
It would be hard to beat Jauchzet, frohlocket!' for upbeat! :D

But for this girl, Bach can do no wrong - if she doesn't enjoy it, the performance must be to blame.

I would like them then. Had a few favorite nightwish songs when tarja trunen was vocalist

Rondo Veneziano - Interludio

From Casanova (1985).
That gondola trip prompts me to draw attention to what I think is one of the most entrancing, mysterious stories in our Archive:

https://www.cruxforums.com/xf/resources/notturno-veneziano-by-ibogo-gabriella-sivilla.658/

It draws us into the colour and life - but even more to the shadows and sinister undertones - of La Serenissima, leading us unnervingly through shifts in time, present and past, to a dramatic conclusion. The co-author (with @GabriellaSivilla ), l'bogo (a Veneziana word, 'the mask'), communicated with me a lot, his intimate knowledge of Venice and the Veneto, its history, culture, cuisine and language fascinated me, but sadly contact ceased at a time when Covid surged back in that region. But the story is a wonderful reminder of his character.
