SEVERA OF PYRGI SCOURGED TO DEATH AS A CHRISTIAN REBEL

Of Saint Severa we do not know the year of her birth or other biographical details, but we do know that she died a martyr's death on 5 June 298 on the beach of the locality named after her. She suffered martyrdom under Diocletian, in fact under this emperor the last and most violent persecution of Christians in the Roman Empire took place. It is in fact remembered in history as the 'Great Persecution'.
The young Severa was a prisoner in the Etruscan city of Pyrgi (whose port is located right next to the castle of Santa Severa, in the municipality of Santa Marinella) with her mother and brothers Mark and Calendino. Severa's mother, named Secunda, died before being interrogated, perhaps out of terror of what awaited her. A few months later, on 5 June, Severa and her brothers suffered martyrdom with lead scourges on the beach of Pyrgi and were buried there.

AFRA OF AUGSBURG TORTURED WITH FLAMING TORCHES

Afra was probably born in the Mediterranean (the name means “one from Africa”). She later moved to Augusta Vindelicum (now Augsburg, Germany), where she worked as a prostitute. During the persecution of Diocletianus a bishop sook shelter in her brothel. Afra and her mother had pity on him and hid him from his pursuers. The bishop introduced the women to the Christian faith and converted them.
When Afra decided to give up her sinful life and closed the brothel, some disappointed customers reported her to the magistrate. In 304 she was first tortured with torches, then burned alive because of her faith.

DOROTHEA OF CAESAREA TORTURED WITH TORCHES

Little is known of the biography of Dorothea. She fell victim to the persecution of Diocletianus in 311 in her hometown, Caesarea in Cappadocia, when she refused to sacrifice to the Emperor. She was consequently tortured and sentenced to death. What exactly was done to her is not quite clear; some reports mention torches, whipping and breast torture, others dipping into boiling water.

EULALIA OF BARCELONA/MERIDA TIED TO AN X-CROSS AND TORTURED TO DEATH

Eulalia, a girl living in Merída or Barcelona (Spain), went to see the trial of a Christian during the persecution of Emperor Diocletianus around 290–305 and there voluntarily proclaimed herself a Christian. Although she was very young, she was tortured in public and killed in an extremely atrocious way: the version of her hagiography from Barcelona states that she was attached† naked to an X cross, and thus diplayed in public. Then the executioners played torches over her body and then lacerated her sides and breasts with hooks. Finally they lit a fire under her that burned her from below; she died from inhaling the smoke. It is said that her soul took on the shape of a white dove when it ascended to heaven.

LEOCADIA OF TOLETANUM PUBLICLY SCOURGED

Leocadia was a Christian slave girl living in Toletanum (today: Toledo, Spain). When she heard of the persecutions of Diocletian, and that the local authorities, in their desire to eradicate Christianity, had already tortured men and women to death, she was filled with disgust at this world and at the same time with a desire for martyrdom.
In 304 she was apprehended, cruelly tortured, and -when she remained steadfast- sent back to prison. There she died of her injuries.
