ANNIA AURELIA LUCILLA CRUCIFIED AND IMPALED FOR TREASON

"Annia Aurelia Lucilla was the second daughter of Roman Emperor Marcus Aurelius and sister to Roman Emperor Commodus. In light of her brother's unstable rule, in 182 Lucilla became involved in a plot to assassinate Commodus and replace him with her husband Quintianus and herself as the new rulers of Rome. Quintianus’ nephew, brandishing a dagger or sword, bungled the assassination attempt trying to kill Commodus. As he burst forth from his hiding place to commit the deed, he boasted to Commodus "Here is what the Senate sends to you", giving away his intentions before he had the chance to act. Commodus's guards were faster than Quintianus and the would-be assassin was overpowered and disarmed without injuring the emperor. Commodus ordered the deaths of all the people involved in the plot. He condemned her sister Lucilla to die on the cross in the arena."

Just wow. Not simply the picture itself, a fiendishly unpleasant form of crux with impalement, nails, a bit between the teeth, a chain preventing her from rising far off the impaling cornu, and a tremendously awkward spike forcing her to arch her back at all times.
No, awful as the crux itself is, the idea of a young imperial lady being treated like this is highly transgressive. This is the real, deepest essence of sadism. I must admit that I share it myself. I like thinking of noblewomen tied, stripped naked and put on the rack o tied to the cross, for eveerybody to see, without any modesty left..

The historical Lucilla was banished to Capri after the failed plot and later assassinated there on order by Commodus. Taking into account that, in the movie The Fall of the Roman Empire (1964), Lucilla (played by Sofia Loren) not only survives the plot (nearly escaping execution) but it is Commodis that gets killed, there is absolutely nothing against this fantasy of the conspirators being executed publically in the arena. The former high status of the condemned makes it extra intruiging and exciting. Good picture and good caption from Michele and good comment from Phlebas.

KYRIAKI OF NICOMEDIA WHIPPED TO DEATH AS A CHRISTIAN

"Kyriaki was born in Nicomedia to Greek parents Dorotheus and Eusebia. They were devout Christians, wealthy but childless. Unceasing in prayer they obtained a child and since she was born on Sunday, the Lord's Day, she was given the name Kyriaki, the Greek word for Sunday. From her childhood, Kyriaki consecrated herself to God. As she was a beautiful young woman, many suitors asked for her hand in marriage, but she refused them all saying that she wished to die as a virgin, as she had dedicated herself to Jesus Christ. A magistrate of Nicomedia also wished to betroth Kyriaki to his son, especially since she came from a wealthy family, but when she once more rejected his proposal, he denounced Kyriaki and her parents as Christians to Emperor Diocletian. Diocletian ordered the family to be arrested and upon their refusal to honor the pagan gods, Dorotheus was beaten until the soldiers grew tired and were unable to continue. Since torment had no effect, Diocletian exiled Dorotheus and Eusebia to Melitene in eastern Anatolia. Kyriaki was sent to Nicomedia to be interrogated by his son-in-law and co-ruler, Maximian, who promised her wealth and marriage to one of Diocletian's relatives if she worshiped the pagan gods. When Kyriaki refused to renounce her faith, Maximian ordered that she be whipped to death. The soldiers who assumed the flogging had to be replaced three times as they eventually became tired."

Yes, such a sentence should be carried out over a long, hot afternoon,
and well into the evening,
the lictors taking frequent breaks for refreshment,
and relieved by fresh volunteers as soon as they tire.
Their victim can hang there, sore and bleeding,
recovering a little strength herself, only to delay her relief of death.
 
The execution of criminals - including Christians - was not the highlight of the games. They were an intermission entertainment between the beast fights and the main event, the gladiator fights. This means they would have usually taken place at mid-day, while the audience was relaxing and eating their lunch.
