Public Executions In The Arena

Go to CruxDreams.com
Illustrations by Aguste Leroux (1871-1954) for the novel 'l'Orgie Latine' (1903) by Félicien Champsaur (1858-1934).

The illustration with the cross is entitled 'les amants' (the lovers) and depicts the execution of the gladiator Sepeos and his girlfriend Filiola in the arena. The novel seems to happen during Claudius' reign and highlights the decadence of Rome, particularly of Empress Messaline. I have not found a full synopsis yet.

They are very poignant. The last farewell to her crucified lover before she is torn apart ad bestias. He hangs in agony as she lies in the dust. What do they say to each other in these last moments?
"I must go ahead now. You will take longer my love, but I will wait for you!"

That goes without saying.

Really Barb, you should know by now,
we CFgirls have some explaining to do here if we're not topless.
Or indeed if we're wearing anything

If you're really keen, you can read the whole thing (in French) at

tip: there are prelims and 20 (XX Roman numbered) pages before the novel starts,
it's 349 pages long - in 6 books, livre 6 is 'La morte de Messaline'

The martyrdom of Sepeos and Filiola is related in livre 4, Les martyres -
it's quite sensuous reading, especially ch III L'ours amoureux ;)
The pictures - lots of b&w lithographs and a good many clour plates like Lox has posted,
are quite appealing to one like me, but I'm interested in artistic book illustration -
they're not steamily erotic, but sensual, pleasantly 'decadent' :)

What do you think of this execution method?
well (she thinks, surprised to be asked such a question while she's being manacled)
the slowly-melting ice is a cruel idea, I'll be tortured with chilblains before I die,
and that knobbly business end is a size too big for me...
still, it's a good straight, smooth ramrod, should skewer me efficiently,
even if my soles are freezing, at least I won't feel cold inside my fanny,
indeed, once it thrusts up, it'll be hot enough to fry my girl-parts pretty fast -
for making a juicy kebab of me, I'll give it 8 out of 10.
