Random picture thread. (Real photos rather than AI please)

Yes, wacky indeed.

Probably needs to be washed every now and then. Check out how dark and grimy the stonework of the church is. No doubt from burning lots of coal for energy. I imagine the air inside the church might be very polluted by our current standards for air quality.
Alledgedly, the photo was taken in 1938, indeed before environmental laws became in vigor.

It just looks pretty macabre: the crucifix was simply thrown upside down onto the stairs and sprayed down with the water hose. :sidra_1:
The most easy way to evacuate the dirty water (while meanwhile, the Christfigure is waterboarded).

We're wondering about reserving this thread for photographs and adding the words 'no AI' into the title.

What do you think?
That would be a wonderful idea and I am convinced that it would also be in the spirit of @Gibbs505, from whom this thread ultimately comes.

Actually Yugoslavian rather than Soviet, in what's now Bosnia-Herzegovina. By Miodrag Živković, a monument erected in memory of the fighters killed in the battle of the Sutjeska when the Partisans suffered a terrible death toll as they broke out of the enemy encirclement in the 5th Nazi offensive in 1943. I think it's impressive, suggesting hands raised in prayer or offering, and marvellously aligned with the natural landscape.
Have to agree, I'm not normally a fan of anything in the Brutalist style but sometimes it's appropriate. A problem I have with it is that even though it can sometimes in the hands of a talented architect create a fearsome beauty, it fails on the human scale, but for a monument to enormous suffering ... that kinda makes sense. It's beyond the human scale.

the "Punchbowl mosque", a rather recent build, is an interesting example

but yeah, at the small scale, compared to the traditional approach, as soon as one gets to ground level, the usual problems...

correct! It was better to write "soviet-style" or "socialist realism"... anyhow, here another "spomenik".
The Monument to the Revolution in Podgarić, Croatia looks like an alien structure in the night:

Authoritarian regimes are fond of big, grandiose monuments. They distract the public from the how terrible they are at governing. That they sometimes look like the work of Aliens is just a bonus. Witness Bulgaria's Buzludzha Monument.

Barb!! Honestly!

What do you mean by “my shoes don’t match the car finish?” They’re blue aren’t they?

Come on, give a girl a break! What else do I have to do to get a lift home?

What? No way? Forget it! I don’t swallow!
For once Barb doesn't complain about the style of shoes. (Personally I think they're gorgeous - but then I would, wouldn't I ? :D)
