Canned food from the NVA (GDR army) operational food. This included two cans with ready meals, a can with bread, 2 instant tea drinks, 2 instant coffee, a can of sweet spread and tablets to sterilize water. Also an alcohol stove with fuel tablets and a can opener. Everything actually tasted quite good, except for the Chester cheese, which was more rubbery and tasted terrible.

This booze was for miners and was given out to the miners for 1.65 (GDR Mark). Those who worked underground received 2 liters per month; those who worked above ground only received one liter.

#1 We expected this at school in the late 1960s. The advantage was that you learned to estimate the result beforehand. When I was at vocational school in 1971, I didn't buy a calculator because the SR1 cost 123 GDR marks and as an apprentice I only earned 80 GDR marks a month. These calculators were also available in the Federal Republic, but they cost 460 DM.
