The day was drawing to an end and the prison wagon rolled up the path to Tree’s cabin as he walked L’ilSiss over to it she spotted a strange device. “Tree, that looks like a Chinese torture pony!”
“It should; that’s what it’s modeled after.”
“But they only had one… um… thing!”
“Yeah, but I made this one for Yupar.”
“Tree, are you still sore over the whip in your ass stunt?”
“In more ways than one; she’s going to ride it to her cross.”
“Damn, Tree, are you going to kill her before she gets there?”
“Not a chance, Siss…”

“Yeah, but I made this one for Yupar.”

When L'ilSiss got back to the cell she found her friends covered with welts.
"What happened to you?"
"We were 'interrogated' by Reverend Lynch and some of his so called nuns from the Order of Penance and Punishment" Messaline replied.
"Did you confess to anything?"
"Funny thing was they didn't ask any questions. I think they just like whipping us" Yupar said. "What did you do all day?"
"I was being interrogated by Tree" L'ilSiss lied. "Oh, Yupar he has the most fiendish device for you to 'ride' when you're taken to the cross!"
"Is it a Chinese torture pony with the shaft that goes up and down?" Yupar asked with a hopeful smile lighting up her face.
"Why, yes it is, but it is more than that! It has two shafts!"
"Is Tree still sore about that whip up the ass thing?" Yupar asked.
"In more ways than one"
"He needs to get over it. He wrote it after all..."

Judge Admi and the Rev. Lynch had a huge argument over crucifying the girls. Lynch wanted it done soon and Admi said there weren’t even laws that allowed that type of execution, although he would be glad to watch such an event. The Reverend said the girls would be old and Utah a state by the time Admi issued a judgment.
He finally convinced Admi to ‘question’ the girls. First up was Connie. She was brutally whipped then brought before the Reverend Lynch. He looked at her trembling in pain and exhaustion. “Connie, just confess and the suffering will end.”
“You can whip me to death before I confess to any of your made up charges” Connie hissed.
“You underestimate me” the reverend replied. “I don’t need to see four women die on crosses.”
He looked to the shed when Connie had just suffered as Messaline was being hoisted up. He called over “Go ahead and begin. Let me know when she is dead.”
“Wait!” Connie screamed…

“Don’t do it, Connie” Messaline called out. “Lynch is a lying bastard! Don’t give him a reason to legally murder you!”
“Give that bitch twenty lashes” Rev. Lynch growled. “And if I don’t start getting confessions I’ll have L’ilSiss hanged in the square tomorrow and Yupar the next Saturday. We already have them on horse-thief charges. They will be plenty disappointed if they miss out on being crucified because you two wouldn’t sign confession.”
“Ok, Lynch, you win” Messaline said. “I’ll sign whatever you want.”
“That’s better. You can do that right after you get your twenty…”

The next morning Messaline was delivered to Tree’s ranch in the prison wagon and she wasn’t in a good mood. Tree asked her why she was mad at him and she said “Tree, we confessed to everything and anything… things we didn’t do, even… and they are still going to hang L’ilSiss at noon as an accomplice to stealing your horse!”
“As an accomplice??? She’s the one that hit me with the shovel!!! She’s as much the ringleader as Yupar- although she didn’t shove the whip up my ass.”
“Are you still sore about that?”
“In more ways than one” Tree replied. He made Messaline a simple breakfast of whiskey and Wu’s fine imported tobacco. And after shackling her to the table said he’d be back after straightening things out…

Tree rode into town and found L’ilSiss already noosed sitting on the back of the horse she and Yupar had stolen from him. An upstanding couple, both community leaders, were checking out the horse. L’ilSiss was explaining the horse had been well taken care of by its previous owner and the only reason she was selling it was she didn’t think she’d be riding much longer…

Judge Admi looked at Tree itching to grab his guns. Last thing he wanted to do was draw against Tree, knowing that when Tree had been drinking he was quick on the draw and wouldn’t stop shooting until both 6-shooters were empty. He raised his hands and said “Ol’ Oak let’s have a drink and talk this over.”
Tree shrugged and said “OK” he and Admi went into the saloon for a drink. As he passed L’ilSiss he said “Don’t go anywhere.”
“Don’t worry, Tree, I’ll just hang around here.”
In the saloon Tree and Judge/sheriff Admi came to an understanding that the four women would be crucified. After Tree had a couple of drinks…
…he went outside and found L’ilSiss had sold his horse. Angrily he said “Siss you are in a heap of trouble…”
