A clip from the late Bob Guccione's "Caligula."

He took a script from Gore Vidal, a cast of A-list actors, and churned out one of the most stupefyingly awful movies in the history of film as an art form.

Mind you, I don't mind the gratuitous hardcore sequences inserted seemingly at random. And I admit that when I first saw that mincing sissy corps of legionaries I lost it, big time. A laugh attack that painfully strained my abs.

Sometimes incredibly bad movies achieve greatness.

It's of poor quality, but here's a serious sequence from the movie. I can imagine Vidal actually wrote this.

I heard somewhere that Caligula would throw roman orgies in front a victum who was being crucified.

I don't think Caligula was any worse than many present day politicians I can think of. I'd happily crucify a banker and have an orgy in the sun.
What a film it must have been!!!....John Gielgud, Peter O'Toole, Helen Mirren, Malcolm McDowell!!. Apostate didn't tell us there was a steamy scene between a Lori Wagner and Marjorie Thorsen. Apparently Gore Vidal and Tinto Brass insisted their names were removed from the credits! We want a copy of that film :)

The whole thing was an attempt to make porn without getting an "X" rating (more movie theaters that way) and to give all those Penthouse Pets theyhad signed to long term contracts something to do to earn legitimate wages they could report to the IRS.

There are a lot a different prints of it. The current British PAL version is 98 minutes & pretty much the same as the US R-rated version. The hard core scenes aren't in that one. The official uncut version is 156 minutes.
Gore Vidal wanted his name taken off because Brass cut out the references to Caligula's homosexual affairs. Tinto Brass wanted his name removed because Guccione wouldn't let him approve the editing. Guccione did the editing himself which may explain why the film is such a mess.
The most shocking thing is that there is not one single crucifixion in the whole film. :-o

If i recall dimly,(i saw the Video full-length version a LOOOONG time ago,bloody boring !!), i-) there was a vague Crucifixion-dream sequence right at the beginning,sort of. :-?
i think the (naked),victim was Female,(like i said "i THINK"....),it was very,very brief !!
Another point,there WAS a photo,(In Penthouse Magazine,where else??),of an edited scene,(cut out,in other words),of a Naked long-haired Woman
Spread-Eagled,manacled to a Disc.You can see everything she had to offer !!
The Caption reads,"Another Victim is shackled to the Killing Machine " !? 8-}
Apart from that,theres fuck-all Cruxing !! ;) Just LOTS of Sex,Sex,& more Sex !! ~x(

The version we have is the 20th Anniversary edition. It is unedited and unrated(?). It comes in two virtual CD'a each one being approx 1hr 12mins long. The CD's are in Xvid format and play on Windows media player. Each CD is also 700 MB. The first one can be downloaded from

We've also split CD 1 into four episodes of 18 mins each. Each episode is 125 MB and is in avi format so they play on Windows media player as well but the quality is not as good.

Thanks for the feedback. Now I know it works I'll post part 2 (704MB) on our new Adrive. For some reason the old one wouldn't accept the video. I'll post the link for part 2 ASAP.

I saw the original version when it first appeared in the UK, and that scene was included. I'm attaching a still. Unfortunately, the victim was only used as a writhing ornament upon the machine, and seen only briefly. What a waste!
