And here in Germany it takes forever to get an appointment. Without bureaucracy and back and forth discussions, nothing seems to work here. Until I can make an appointment, it still takes me a while I'm clearly under 70 years of age and that's not my turn yet. The appointment allocation had to be divided into 5 age groups and each of them had to be divided into subgroups, just typically German!

don't get me started on the games they've been playing with the Astrazeneca/Oxford vaccine...

The complaint about 'bureacracy' and 'slow roll out' of the vaccin campaigns is heard in many countries. Particularly compared to a few, like Israel and the UK. But it is a matter between caution or speeding up. UK and Israel are lucky that the vaccin does what it is expected to do, without unpleasant side effects, otherwise they would be in big trouble today.

Anti-racism protests last summer were allowed
But a peaceful vigil over the murder of a young woman must be arrested by police. Hmmmm?

Yes, it doesn’t help that the vigil was in remembrance of a woman allegedly murdered by a police officer..

At least they waited until the Duchess of Cambridge had left before attacking the crowd. It is reported that there were about an equal number of male and female officers present, but it was the males who began arresting the women. An unconfirmed report is that female officers refused orders from senior males to arrest women peacefully taking part in the vigil.

From the Telegraph:
Dame Cressida Dick on Sunday night defended her force's handling of the Sarah Everard vigil and said lockdown laws had left the police in an "invidious" position.
The Metropolitan Police Commissioner, who insisted she would not resign, said her officers were having to interpret Covid restrictions while applying common sense and discretion as she hit out at "armchair" critics who attacked the police when they got it wrong.

Priti Patel, the Home Secretary, said that Saturday night's scenes were "upsetting" and that after speaking to Dame Cressida there were still questions that needed to be answered about the policing of the event.

Sadiq Khan, the Mayor of London, also met with Dame Cressida and said he had not been satisfied with the explanation she had provided.

The Commissioner has been summoned to a meeting at Downing Street on Monday with Boris Johnson, who said he was "deeply concerned" by the scenes on Saturday.

Dame Cressida, however, insisted that her officers had been in an "invidious" position as they tried to get people to disperse from what was an "unlawful gathering".

It seems to me that the Met Police could use some lessons from their peers in Myanmar as to handling "unlawful gathering."

[I do wonder what they did with the redhead when they got her back to the basement of the station house?]

"Typically American" is to have a federal system where everybody has their own rules. In one county in Arizona everyone who lives or works there can get it. The "Cherokee Nation" in Oklahoma also is way ahead of the curve. In some states teachers can, in others not yet--leading to strikes and a lot of tension in, say, Chicago. West Viriginia was the most effective and prioritized various occupational groups and set up special venues in rural areas. My state has age groups. The web site was poorly written, and every time I chose a date and time from those available I was told there were no appointments available. I finally had to call. There is more choice now that Johnson and Johnson has an approved "emergency" vaccine. We are fortunate in that we have a lot of manufacturing facilities. Canada, despite having purchased vaccine, was assigned the Pfizer facility in Belgium as its source, and when that went down there was a shortage. It does seem that things are going better now, and Merck is going to manufacture Johnson and Johnson's vaccine (their own two candidates failed in trials). The U.S. government is both funding the vaccines and issuing orders under the Defense Procurement Act to move things along. But, there are still a lot of nitwits who "won't take a vaccine". Trump himself did, although secretly--kind of a betrayal of his "loyal supporters". I really don't get how this can be political, but it is. Most people just don't understand the facts well enough to make up their own minds, and some think there's a conspiracy--like "evolution".

Frank’s post is a good summary of how it’s going on this side of the pond. And, unfortunately, the last sentence captures a misguided attitude/belief that seems deeply entrenched among a sizable segment of the population.
