Episode 14 Preparing the Puissant Princess

“What you are leaving me?” Paskai Lin felt her mouth gape in horror and struggled to find more words, “But we only just got here!”

“This part of the journey ins for you, now I shall return to my homeland, I have not seen it in a long time,” Answered Li’hi.

“But I won’t know anyone here!” Wailed Paskai.

“You know Jade Shadow and at least some of her ninja women, you know your slave Little Fox and the slave Doretja, you will come to know others,” Li’hi said gently but firmly, “You must focus of your lessons; statecraft, history, the arts, the ways of armies and the ways of warriors.”

“Yes Mistress Li’hi but you are old, will I see you again?” Asked Paskai subdued.

“With hope, there is always hope Your Imperial Highness,” Li’hi bowed and took her leave.

Paskai was not sure she liked the idea of being alone in this high fastness, this fortress of cut stone above a mountain of living rock all capped with snow as far as the eye could see, even the other mountains were all bare rock and snow. The life here that was always seemed on the edge of being frozen, true there were many people in the fortress, many ninja women, their novices and nuns of another strange religion and their servants but the nearest villages were all in valleys far below and seemingly an entire season apart from this roof of the world where the air grew thin and cold.

The first time Jade Shadow made Paskai run, she thought she would keel over and die. Her sight grew dim, red around the edges and blurry, her lungs and throats seemed to catch fire and her head was feet to burst while her arms and legs were soft jelly.

Wearing only a thin shift Paskai collapsed into the snow, “How can anyone run up here, there is no air!” She protested some gasping minutes later.

“Learning to run here will make your legs and lungs stronger when on the plains below, now up again or your bottom will freeze to the ice, again around the circuit and be glad, this is a rest day on work days you will carry a bulk of lumber to further build up your muscles, now up, up,” Jade Shadow struck Paskai with her short whip.

“Ow, ow, ow,” Cried Paskai at each fresh stripe across her bottom before she started running fast enough Jade Shadow could not keep up and whip her at the same time.

Then there was climbing, Paskai was made to climb down a cliff face near the fortress and collect rocks from the bottom. The first time Paskai refused to climb down, Jade Shadow tied her to the crane that was used to haul up the goods delivered by the peasant from the villages below and hurled her off the edge. Paskai’s terrifying plunge was perhaps a lot slower than falling but it did not feel like it. In future Paskai grudgingly made the climb.

On the other hand at least on those days she was allowed to eat dinner in peace.

When studying the arts and philosophy she had to eat and listen to recitations of poetry and history and then interrupt her meals to answer questions.

The study of statecraft involved long boring accounts of well accounts for a start she had to learn how the fortress monastery calculated its gross income from the peasants and lesser nobles and the allowances for each nun and warrior and so on and so forth and who were granted exceptions and why. Then she had to learn how all the cities in Tibet traded with each other and China and the rest of Mongolia from Korea in the east, Vietnam and Burma in the south, the frozen wastes of Siberia in the North to the far cities of Moscow and Kiev in the west.

Just in case that all grew too boring dinner was especially exciting as Paskai had to dodge first servant girls and boys armed with whips and clubs and later when she got too good at that ninja women joined in simply to get to supper. She then had to learn how to receive ‘unexpected’ embassies, sometimes earnest but smelly peasants, sometimes clean smelling but arrogant nobles and sometimes nuns. To keep her on her toes sometimes the embassy would include an ‘assassin’ who would still her supper if she did not spot her in time. If she did spot him, as sometimes it was a a man or boy, then she was allowed extra dessert but if she spotted the wrong person she had to stay up late at night and do some aggravating chore like change all the candles in the fortress.

All of this and often by the time she crawled to bed Paskai was too tired for sex with Doretja and Little Fox…well sometimes…

"Preparing the Puissant Princess"?

Now, that's what I call "pandering puerile purple prose".:p

Has anyone mentioned that the story is set in XIII century China & ninjas are from XVI century Japan?
Well, now they have.

Excuse the interruption.
Carry on Rodent.

I meant no offense, your highness.
But, with so many talented martial artist in China, why should Paskai have to import an assassin from Japan?

If it is the case, why were you waiting since August 2013, when the first thread of this Saga was starting ("Charming Tiger, Learing Dragon" Messa of Jin 1.JPG ) and where , from the first pic, ninjas were appearing ?

If your wish is to "crucify" us, continue your quips if you find your happiness in them ...

But, know well, we'll not stop our "puerile story" : it's our happiness !

Okay I am stepping in now

Has anyone mentioned that the story is set in XIII century China & ninjas are from XVI century Japan?
Well, now they have.

Has anyone mentioned that the word ninja itself is a later appellation to groups known in contemporary sources by a variety of terms? There are actually hints of organised secret services in Japan as far back as the XII century. However the Shinobi who seem the main group(s) associated in the modern mind with Ninja did not become identified until the Sengoku period. However the term ninja has been widely applied to a range of groups not directly connected to the Shinobi in the popular literature and culture.

As a puerile work of light hearted entertainment the word ninja was chosen to encapsulate the nature of Messaline of Jin's private assassin order without pages of unnecessary exposition

I meant no offense, your highness.

The funny thing is, had you been paying attention towards the end of the second arc you would more likely realise there is no certainty that Jade Shadow has been imported from anywhere. The Ninja Women of Messaline of Jin were ordered to find a secure location and rebuild their strength. Likely they recruit from local girls but it is not impossible they send agents further afield in search of possible candidates, since the tale of the order which being by its nature all female would be deemed an affront to the highly patriarchal regimes that dominated many if not most nearby lands in the period (especially Japan) is a whole other story in itself we have not gone into it.

Only in the local surrounds where their demonstrable usefulness and ruthlessness serves to at least temper prejudice do they even approach open activity and even then I suspect they do not exactly advertise.

Right Naraku, repeat a hundred times:
Peter Piper piqued a pertly pretty Perpignan poppet!
(yes I know you're not from Perpignan Messa,
but it's just a joke - like Naraku's was :p)

...but it's just a joke - like Naraku's was :p)

I can admit your "joke", Eul, but I've some difficulty to admit the jokes/critics coming from someone who has never put a little "like" to this story on which we are working hardly, RR and me !
To do a pic, I work, on average, 1 or 2 hours and I've already made 42 pics only for this one !
I dont count for "Charming Tiger ..." and for "Into the Dragon ..." ...

So, some respect could be welcomed !

I'll assume we have a problem of translating humor from English to French. My "puerile prose" comment was aimed at RR, not yourself, Messa and only made in jest. It was not meant as a criticism of his writing or your pictures & I'm sorry if you took it as such.

I don't comment on everything I read nor click "like" on everything I see. I do not feel obligated to do so nor do I believe anyone else is.

Again, I'm sorry if you took offense. However, I realized long ago that I have no control over the reactions of others.

In the interest of keeping thing civil, I will no longer post comments in this thread.

This has been addressed... on with the story... Peace on earth or else....

I well want to believe you, Naraku , but this "puerile prose" touched me because RR and I are linked in this story and I also participate with my ideas to the redaction of the story ...(not only in illustrating)

A second thing : I had wished these stories because, somewhere, I was tired of the blood'stories, where all is finishing by death after horrible tortures or crucifixions !
Here, we have a human heroïne, with her questions, her doubts , but also proud and wanting to reach her target ...
Somewhere, I'm a bit of this heroïne and it's very gratifying for me : I'm needing of that ...

Sorry if we've reacted a little too quickly and perhaps too much strong , but , like you say, the language is certainly sometimes a problem to understand the other members ...

You are close to the story, Messa, as it involves you and touches you. Of course you will feel protective towards it. Online it is easy to take things the wrong way. I have often penned a strong reply to someone, not posted it, and been grateful after that I did not. Most of us do not mean harm :)

We need to see variety in the stories offered, and this one provides exactly that. We all have different tastes, and different needs, and the group is here to provide a platform for that. Please do continue dear Messa (I won't say carry on RR as he doesn't need encouragement from me :p)

Naraku probably heard the one about three kinds of people: sheep, wolves and sheep dogs...it is of course complete bullshit. Corner a sheep and she will turn and fight, try it on with a flock with a ram and expect to be charged, wolves by nature are good family folk, they can be bastards ( but hey so are families) and I suspect they would vote as social conservatives given the chance, sheep dogs though...

See when a sheep dog thinks it has fucked up you get none of the passive aggressive shit you get from some humans. They come up and lie on the ground and try to express pitiful contrition while looking you in the eye with those maxed out adorable eyes (hey I never said they did not try wheedling).

You could learn a lot from sheep dogs.
