Episode 15 The Path to Royalty
“Pay close attention, this is an uchigatana a warrior’s sword designed to be drawn fast and kill with the first stroke,” Jade Shadow reverently held up the blade balanced on one finger of each hand so that it caught the light.
“Pardon a what?” Asked Paskai.
“An uchigatana,” Answered Jade Shadow, “It is a true warrior’s sword designed to…”
“Can’t we just call it a katana for short rather than the whole uchioguchy-wotsits?” Frowned Paskai.
“Uchi…oh well Supreme High Lady…this is a katana it is a warrior’s blade,” Jade Shadow shifted so that she was holding its hilt in her left hand, “It is an elegant weapon, designed for swift controlled strikes,” The hilt was now in her right hand, “With this weapon in her hands a warrior can defeat many inferior foes or with cunning poise and a deft strike bring down even a superior swordsman who underestimates her.”
“I want Doretja and Litte Fox to receive training as ninjas,” Said Paskai.
“What? No they are too old, will you please focus Most Honoured Lady,” Jade Shadow tried to go on with her instruction.
“But if I am the Supreme Lady surely I should be able to give some orders and have them obeyed?” Challenged Paskai-Lin.
“I beg pardon Most Wise and…Forceful Lady, it shall be as you command but they will not find the training easy nor will they achieve the full range of skills of the sisters of my Order,” Jade Shadow bowed.
“I win, so this katana, how do you use it, like this, hah, swish, off with your head villain, waa-hah death to you evil doer!” Paskai swept through a flurry of blows with the sword she had picked up, her swings were not entirely without skill but showed a joyful disregard for the practicalities of battle.
“Ouch,” Yelped Paskai dropping her sword as Jade Shadow slapped her wrist with the flat of her blade.
“You must always guard yourself at all times, had I used the edge you would be in need of a new hand,” Jade Shadow admonished, “Now we shall use these wooden practise blades, if only so the Most Fearless Lady does not cut herself until she has learned to control a real sword.”
“Spoilsport,” Sulked Paskai but did as she was bid.
Some days later Paskai would crawl into bed, “Oh I ache all over, Jade Shadow beat meat black and blue with those bloody wooden swords of hers.”
“I ache all over, especially my shoulders, they have me beating up a bowl of water as they say my muscles need to be stronger for archery,” Complained Doretja.
“Ha, you think you have it bad, at least you both got to stay in the warm, they made me run around outside all day, they say my legs and lungs are weak from never being out of the saddle, cruel witches!” Gasped Little Fox.
“Oh I think we have some ointments for easing your chest, let me see,” Said Doretja, rolling off the bed and rummaging in a cabinet.
“Do you have anything for your shoulders too, I could rub it on you while you do Little Fox,” Suggested Paskai from under the covers.
“Oh and maybe something for Our Lady’s bruises?” Added Little Fox, “We could massage her sore spots,” She giggled.
The end result was rather inevitable but agreeable, a happily sighing tangle of limbs.
The rumble was more felt than heard a savage growling spike of sound that drove in hard behind the ears and could not be mistaken for anything good. The girls came awake of an instant as all of the fortress monastery filled with noise, banging gong, horns, slamming doors, the thunder of feet on wooden floors and shouted questions.
Amid the chaos that concentrated in the great hall Jade Shadow and Abbess of the Order of Nuns who shared the citadel took command. Orders raped out, ninja women nodded, nuns bowed with hands held together and novices and servant genuflected.
“Ah Paskai good, you will stay here with the nuns and help organise things,” Jade Shadow said with quick certain confidence, “Little Fox and Doretja will accompany me and the relief parties.”
“What has happened?” Asked Paskai.
“An avalanche has buried a village, we shall try and dig out those survivors we can and bring them here to be revived,” Jade Shadow said and strode off.
“But why do I have to stay here, I want to come too,” Paskai protested.
“It is too dangerous for the Most High and Sacred Lady, you must remain safe at all costs, there may be other avalanches or rock falls,” Jade Shadow advised her and then marched off into the night without another word.
Paskai was obedient. She stayed and answered question about the distribution of blankets and and settled a dispute over who was responsible for boiling hot water and whether or not soup should be prepared, the kitchen staff obviously and yes…then she was asked should candles be released from the stores that were supposed to wait until next month…”Yes, yes, yes, you can do all this yourselves, stop asking me stupid questions!”
Paskai stormed out into the courtyard, she saw a group of male servants arguing, “Yes of course they will need more benches, there may be injured people who need treatment so bring out the extra tables as well so we still have some free to feed people from,” Paskai snapped, the men bowed and scurried to their jobs with a sudden demonstration of energy.
“Idiots, pretending not to know what to do, who says I know what to do, you just do,” Paskai raged at the night and stormed off into the dark following the trail of flickering torches in the distance. The rocky path down into the valley was slippery with ice and chancy. Paskai found only her reflexes developed in the years of running wild on Venetian rooftops and honed since by constant training saved her from tumbling head first the fast and fatal way down.
“You,” She greeted some battered looking and dismayed villagers, “When you get to the courtyard find a servant and tell them to bring braziers and torches to fire them from down this road, we need one every fifty paces or so, but can use more if they have them, people will need light and warmth on this road, tell them Princess Paskai commands it!” She added as the villagers nodded and continued their struggle up the road.
Paskai continued on her way, here and there passing groups of refugees, many of them were struggling and scrambling along in the darkness. Paskai could only tell where they were very often by the soft whimpers and shuffling footfalls ahead until she was right on top of them, on this cloudy moonless night light was at a premium. Then Paskai heard a wail from the wrong direction and stopped.
“Are you alright?” She asked loudly into the darkness, her only was response was more bubbling tears. “I am coming to you, can you hear?” Paskai asked, she was not sure if the new crying was a response or just a child’s distress. She stumbled her way among some rock and then found herself on what might be a side path.
“I am here, my name is Paskai, can you hear me, can you tell me your name?” She called. The crying was not exactly talking but it gave her kind of beacon to head towards, she realised she was slip sliding off the narrow secondary path but pressed on determined to find out who it was and how much trouble they were in.
Some scrabbling about and she stumbled across the half chilled form of a body. It was easy to guess that this was the parent or perhaps older sibling given its small size of the very small boy wailing besides the corpse. A tumble in the dark had proven lethal, a broken neck and that was that. Had Paskai not been along the night’s cold grasp would have claimed the child too.
“Well don’t worry now, everything will be okay, you are with me,” Paskai said confidently and she scooped the toddler into her arms. Then the earth gave a growl, “Oh shit,” Exclaimed Paskai just before half a mountain fell on her.
Jade Shadow was frantic with worry. Paskai had spotted the need for illumination on the path up to the citadel and then disappeared, none of the idiots she had left with her had thought to keep a close eye on the wilful girl and now Jade Shadow, her entire Order, had failed in their sacred mission.
“Erm could someone take this baby, I think he just weed on me,” Said a Paskai with snow in her hair, snow down her neck and the shivers.
“Where the hell, I mean what the hell did you think you were doing?” Snarled Jade Shadow as a woman rushed up to take the child.
“Hum honorific?” Suggested Paskai hoping to divert Jade Shadow’s rage.
“Where the hell did you go and what did you think you were doing and how could you risk your sacred person for some small child when you know all China needs you, Your Most Excellent Lady?” Jade Shadow ranted.
“It seemed a good idea at the time…well until the second avalanche but I dug myself out and now I think a hot bath and some food?” Paskai suggested coyly.
“Yes,” Agreed Jade Shadow, “And then I will have you tied to an x beam and flogged till you learn never, ever, to do this again!”
