For future reference, this is what carrying the cross looks like.

I confess I never thought much about carrying the cross and its psychological implications.

Probably because I'm not excited nor interested by anything that is related to Jesus and his crucifixion, so I just ignored this aspect.

Perhaps I was wrong, I might assemble a story focused just on that in the future.
After all, carrying the cross means you literally carry on your shoulders the instrument of your naked exposure, humiliation, torture, and eventually death: it's a lot to think about.

In the Roman Crucifixion was part of the crucifixion ritual: the condemned (man or woman) after a vigorous whipping - never excessive because it was not supposed to lead to early death but only to cause a lot of pain - was forced to proceed towards the place of his atrocious death carrying on his shoulders - already wounded by the whippings - the "patibulum" which was the wood to which he would be nailed in the wrists. Along the way it was customary to continue whipping him. Then he would reach the foot of the vertical pole that was already fixed in the ground and there he (or she) then raised would be nailed to the post at the ankles or feetand. The torture was continuous until an atrocious death, but the "via crucis" was a considerable part of it, both psychologically and for the shame of exposing the body and the pain, humiliating him, of the condemned…

Holy Words, you wrote Holy Words. @maumau59 describes exactly what is a standard Passion of a Condemned Woman.

Yes ,the shame for walking naked and bleeding between two wings of people is an important part.

The udders hang down and dance because her torso is bent forward. Exiciting, isn't ?

Moreover , most times she has a rope around her neck to pull and drag her by one of torturer or, I prefer, from a humble beast as a small donkey.

She found her husband to be unfaithful and poisoned him, something that is not done to a senator. She has been tried and sentenced to death by crucifixion. During her wait, she has been scourged and raped. For her march to her crucifixion, she is striped naked and a crown of thorns is mashed around her head to symbolize her 'goddess' status. No mercy has been shown her until she is halfway to the hill. Concerned carrying the cross would speed her death, the soldiers ask for volunteers to help carry her cross. She is more than aware this is no act of kindness. It is only to increase the time she suffers nailed to the wood...

Monkey puzzle trees for me. Araucaria araucana iirc, aka Chilean Pine

Distinctive branches that look quite pretty when fresh

The trunk is quite spiky too!

But those branches dry out

And are very nasty. I’ve been cut by them through my shoes after they’d fallen to the ground!

Just to let you know, it’s my MASTER’s favourite tree- he likes to chain me to one before a whipping…. That means bare feet, of course.

So yes, @Eulalia i share your fantasy of spiked plants prickling my flesh (loincloth skirt is very thin- trust me it doesn’t stop much in the way of prickly plants, not even small ants biting through). But I also have to deal with the reality, especially the Monkey Puzzle tree. Tbh I was surprised that when we were in Arizona that MASTER didn’t tie me to a Sajuaro. Possibly if we go back?
The worst Arizona cactus is the Teddy Bear Cholla (at least in my opinion). The spines are long, sharp, dense, and hence very difficult to extract. (The plant is segmented, and a segment that can cling to the fur or hide of a passing beast will be able to root and propagate in a new location.) They are nowhere near tall enough to serve as whipping posts, however.

But a segment might be used as a variant type of vampire glove to torture a slave, right?

Still nothing as severe as Gympie Gympie leaves (aka the Stinging Tree). That contains a neurotoxin so bad even I wouldn’t volunteer to touch the spines! The burning sensation can last for months, potentially even for years, and has been known to drive people insane…

One of the world’s most dangerous plants
