Maybe an agave? The leaves don't look stiff enough and there don't seem to be any spines, but they are the right shape. In some agaves, don't the bottom leaves die off as the plant grows and leave a stalk-like structure with leaf "scars"? I guess one could make a crude whip out of an agave leaf.Some fascinating tropical plants in those pics. Yes, I thought something of the Agave kind, or possibly a Cordyline - in the same large family, Asparagaceae. There's one called 'Purple Tower'

Monkey puzzle trees for me. Araucaria araucana iirc, aka Chilean Pine
Distinctive branches that look quite pretty when fresh
The trunk is quite spiky too!
But those branches dry out
And are very nasty. I’ve been cut by them through my shoes after they’d fallen to the ground!
Just to let you know, it’s my MASTER’s favourite tree- he likes to chain me to one before a whipping…. That means bare feet, of course.
So yes, @Eulalia i share your fantasy of spiked plants prickling my flesh (loincloth skirt is very thin- trust me it doesn’t stop much in the way of prickly plants, not even small ants biting through). But I also have to deal with the reality, especially the Monkey Puzzle tree. Tbh I was surprised that when we were in Arizona that MASTER didn’t tie me to a Sajuaro. Possibly if we go back?
