What? Petra was only whipped for striking her mistress! She should have been immediately tortured and executed for that. Slaves are routinely crucified for much less. This needs some explaining.
What was going on between Petra and her mistress that saved Petra's life after the slapping incident? What gave Petra the nerve to even think about slapping her mistress?
Though a slave, Petra was a smart and manipulative woman. That her mistress was an emotionally fragile and temperamental woman who was lonely and ignored by her husband gave Petra the idea she could insinuate herself into her mistress's emotionally-starved life and gain some advantage by that. Perhaps she'd even be able to gain her freedom! As a body slave Petra was already close to her mistress and knew of her isolation and sexual frustration. Body slaves are often trusted and taken as confidants by their mistresses and Petra used her position to play upon her mistress's loneliness and insecurities to initiate a sexual relationship with her. Petra proved an excellent lover and soon she and her mistress were sharing the same bed every night. Petra was able to satisfy every sexual longing her mistress had and gained much favor for it from her. However, Petra fatally misjudged the power relationship between them, mistaking her mistress's apparent affection for her as an indication she thought of Petra as someone worthy of manumission, someone worthy of equality.
This misjudgment reared its fatal head one night when, after exhaustive love-making and heart-pounding mutual orgasms, and while laying naked in each other's arms, their tumescent nipples still rubbing together in the warm afterglow of sex, Petra pressed the argument for manumission with her mistress. Fearing her life was likely forfeit Petra cowered on the floor begging for mercy. Her mistress screamed for the majordomo and ordered Petra to be whipped and sent to the field slaves' quarters. The majordomo quickly obeyed and, procuring a leather lash, administered Petra a dozen lashings which left her back, buttocks, and breasts bloody. Though relieved she wasn't immediately executed Petra spent a fearful night thinking she might be crucified the next day. At dawn, however, she was ordered into the fields to work all day as her painful wounds oozed and crusted over.
During the time Petra was insinuating herself into their mistress's life, Mella, the other body slave, aware of Petra's manipulative nature, had become fearful of her junior position. Mella knew she could be sent into the fields to work or even sold off if Petra gained too much influence with their mistress. The two body slaves had never been that friendly to begin with. Petra was a little older and imperious towards Mella, often ordering her about as though she was mistress of the manor. While not as smart or manipulative as Petra, Mella was much more attractive which soon brought her to the attention of her mistress's husband who, as dominus, routinely rutted with any female slave who worked in the manor house. Mella was smart enough to know he could possibly protect her and was perfectly willing to open her legs to his sexual advances. (She knew, of course, that she had no choice in the matter if her dominus wanted her. Any resistance to being raped could get her killed!) Other slaves were alerted and the majordomo quickly arrived and ordered Mella and Petra to be held in custody. In the morning the master meted out justice. There was no question of Petra's guilt and she was condemned to immediate crucifixion. Watching the screaming Petra being crucified Mella begged for her life, pleading with her master, desperately hoping he would take their affectionate relationship into account. The master briefly considered releasing Mella but after careful consideration understood the need for slaves to be held accountable for failing to act in the best interests of their masters. Order must be maintained. He regretfully ordered Mella crucified also.
Petra and Mella had hoped for better lives through close relationships with their owners. Yet both died as slaves often do when their low status could not realistically offer them a chance at a better life. Petra and Mella hanged naked all day and night, nailed to their crosses, suffering horribly as the daily life of the manor went on around them. Mella screamed at Petra for hours.
