Erotic helplessness : a study of the history of the Damsel in Distress theme in art

Go to CruxDreams.com
In April 1846, rumours reached the press in Western Europe, about a famous Polish socialite having been flogged by the Russian authorities in Warsaw. British press took it over, and an illustrator visualised it. Although the rumours were never confirmed, English readers could stir their imagination about the ordeal of the poor damsel.

I try to avoid reposts of pics which have already a thread on their own, here on CF.
Jan Sluijters (1881-1957), The Rape of Serbia
About the topic 'The rape of Serbia' (in World War I), I have another one, by Alexandre-Théophile Steinlen (1859-1923), which is also subject of an old thread of mine :

You will there find out where my avatar comes from.

And finally, if you want a whole lot of damsels in distress in one panoramic pic, I suggest the famous, but unfortunately lost panorama by Jan Styka (1858 - 1924), 'The Martyrdom of Christians in Nero's Circus' :

Yes, those propaganda posters back in the day really nailed it ;) Do you know whether there are higher resolution images of "Serbia crucified" ?
I love those Jan Styka images as well. The loss of that panoramic painting is a real bummer...

Andromeda and Perseus: a subject treated so many times in painting.
Here, by Giuseppe Cesari (1592).
Andromeda, maybe, is the first woman-in-peril in (mythological) history.
Fortunately, Perseus came to her rescue! But some people think: it is a pity he arrived in time!

Indeed, that is why my favorite Andromeda paintings are those that are open-ended, where Perseus has not yet appeared and where Andromeda is as yet still alone in her peril...

Donatien Alphonse Francois de Sade (1740-1814) better known as the Marquis de Sade, about to Whip a Servant Girl. Anonymous Engraving from the Beginning of the 19th Century. Thought it might interest you, @ducon007 ;)

Or maybe he was the first of the anarchists and wanted to "enjoy without restraint", as we said in May 68...
Ah yes, the eternal debate about Sade's legacy. I personally see in him rather the extreme degeneration of absolutism, of a bygone age where lords had power of life and death over their serfs (like countess Bathory, though Sade of course did not murder anyone), than a proto-anarchist. He did not bother to seek the consent of the partners he abducted, beat up and raped. As such, while I am fascinated by the man, I avoid making him into an early apostle of unrestrained freedom...
