Fortunino Matania combining his talents as a war illustrator and a lover of damsels in distress. Don;t know the story of the two versions

Some sacrificial scenes from Matania, although in the first the Roman matron Paulina is only going to sacrifice her person to a man pretending to be the god Anubis (this is the deception that leads to The Crucifixion of Ide) . The second is from one of E R Burroughs' Mars novels.

Matania didn't do many paintings, which some consider a loss. The first is "False Alarm" while the second is Nessus abductint Deainera. The last is sometimes referred to as "At the Edge"
I prefer the altenative title "Checkmate".

Detective mode engaged: The middle picture appears to be pro-Belgian and anti-German propaganda from The First World War. Although I have not seen this one before, there was a theme of showing invaded countries as naked crucified women, a great tradition which should be revived!
The picture is labelled "belgium-23" and there is a partly legible signature "P Cannere or Gannere" or similar. Try looking it up and see if there is more.
Edit: I tried but could not find anything else by this artist.
