All new to Tree, though he gave up on galley slaves when he bought a 300HP outboard motor...

... he kept the slaves, though!

I highly doubt that’s what she’s thinking … more likely it’s: “why are we still rowing when he’s bought a 300 hp outboard motor.”

Question: is there such a thing as a 300 hp outboard motor, or did Tree make that one up?

And if there is, will he let me take it out for a spin?

You are not on my boat... thus the rowing.

There were 300 hp outboard motors. Mercury made one (I think it was called the 'Black Max') and Yamaha did too.

And NO you can't 'take it out for a spin'!!!

I think Mercury still do. And Suzuki. The woman doctor who served the Small Isles (Rum, Eigg, Muck and Canna) zoomed around in a 300hp Zodiac, in pretty well all weathers - a seriously impressive sight!

Zodiac is a top-class rigid inflatable, pretty well unsinkable - so yes, very booby, breasting the waves.
