it's quite true, waves washing over the gunwales rinse the benches, we just lift our butts as we swing forward and with luck the wood will be washed when we pull back.

That's an advantage of benches in the open (but you have to undergo any weather without protection). And hardly practical for benches which are below deck.

This image had me thinking about some common cliches of the very niched genre of female galley slavery porn, that defy all logic:
-even though they've been living in slavery for years, the female galley slaves are still beautiful and attractive;
-even though they sleep on the floor in a rat-infested, cramped room below the deck, their hair is still impecable;
-no matter how slender they are, they can still row and keep up the pace;
-if the overseer is female, it's usually a mistress dressed in generic dominatrix clothing (black leather, spiked collar);
-even if it's freezing cold outside, the slave girls are still naked or half-naked;
-there's always a large amount of chains. Wrists, ankles, neck... they all need to be shackled. The more, the better. Even though so many chains might be impractical, expensive and slow down the rowers;
-rowers get horrible food, yet, they still have the strength to keep toiling and they still are good looking;
-the newest slave girl is often the protagonist and ends up sitting next to the oldest one, the most evil one or the rebel leader. Or, if she is the rebel leader, her mate is the shy and obedient one;
-there's always that one slave girl coming from a privileged lifestyle (a princess, the daughter of a rich merchant or anything like that), and yet, her captors never try to sell her for ransom or force her to give them some money to buy her freedom;
-the overseers always have an evil, cruel smile on their face and they don't seem too bothered by the horrible smell;
-there's always the unnecessary restraints or punishments that are very unpractical and are there just for the fetish fuel. Neck collars connected to the ceiling (The Magic Christian scene), slave girls pushing and pulling metal oars (same movie), slave girls forced to sit on phallic objects that enter their butts, slave girls wearing chastity belts or body harnesses, etc.
Don't get me wrong, I'm all for this very niched fetish, but it's funny to think about how unpractical such a galley would be.

1. Agreed, though the stronger ones would be in good shape.
2. Agreed. Clare Seven simply has their hair shaven off. When the protagonist protests, she's told "in a year when it's grown back, you're going to wish we'd shave you again."
3. Anyone who can't is thrown overboard. That means that A) nobody who can't is present and B) there's a powerful motivation to keep up the pace.
4. ROFLMAO. I don't think I'd be able to take something like this seriously enough to enjoy it properly. Sounds like a Mel Brooks movie.
5. That's actually not a real concern - first, constant labour provides warmth, and second, since (at least in a closed ship) the rowers are all bunched together with very little ventilation, their combined body heat would be trapped in the chamber.
6. Partially agreed, though I think it's less of an issue than you might think. We all agree leg chains are pretty much de-riguer - you don't want your rowers moving around, after all. Chaining wrists to the oar is more practical than at it seems at first sight because it prevents the rower from shirking by "rolling" the oar. If more than one slave are chained to the same oar, it also forces them to move together in perfect rhythm. I do agree about collars - there's no point in chaining the girls any further and it risks just slowing them down. However keeping an unattached collar around their necks makes it easier to leash them quickly if they need to be removed for whatever reason. And chains aren't expensive - esp. since you can reuse them when the slaves are, er, replaced.
7. If you feed your slaves horribly, you either have a truly spectacular replacement pool to choose from, or you just don't care about economic losses. Rowers should be fed well and regularly, with high-calorie intake. It doesn't need to be tasty, but it does need to be nourishing.
8. Depends on the writing. I've seen a few stories that have the girl pass through several bench partners over the years.
9. Not really familiar with that trope. However I think it could be justified: she could be there because the captain seeks revenge or her or family, or because her family is now bankrupt. Also, if you're keeping a girl for ransom, you may as well put her to work until the money comes in (or maybe it already had and you simply didn't bother returning her). Knowledge that every day they tarry keeps their daughter chained naked to an oar does remarkable things for providing the family with motivation to redeem her.
10. Like sewage workers, I think eventually they wouldn't notice the smell. Also, to prevent disease from killing your rowers and/or spreading to rest of the ship, realistically you need to hose the place down every twice a week at minimum, preferably more.
11. Agreed. Any girl who can't get sufficient motivation from repeated whipping all day just isn't worth keeping around.
