And the executioners are always very similar to me. 3D Artists well know how should they be to instill terror

Indeed, and that makes No. 13 in the Prue pictures as it's clearly the same artist but not included in the 12 pictures generally in circulation for Prue. i wonder how many more there are lurking in the shadows.

I believe there are a total of 12 illustrations in this set. To keep them together, here are the missing ones:


Here are another few old drawings of judicial punishments I found on mainstream image agency sites (although clearly pre-1923, so copyright-free). The first said to be "female patriots in Poland flogged for their views". The second comes with the description: "Public flogging of a young woman in Manassa, America, because of a relationship with a clergyman, caricature by Adolf Willette on modern American rudeness, circa 1900". The third is "WHIPPING POST, 1878. A white woman being flogged by an African American constable for stealing a pair of shoes in Virginia. American newspaper engraving, 1878." [NB: The outrage expressed by the engraver is about the colour of the constable's skin, not the public whipping, or the woman's crime.]



Finally, I have come across this illustrated story vignette using a drawing by Roger Benson. Not sure if the story is also his, but whoever wrote it had clearly read Nell in Bridewell:

Edit: Looking through the thread, I think most of these have indeed already been posted here (I should have known), although I think the Bridewell ones are an upgrade in quality and convenient in bringing the full set together.

This servant girl is being led out to the public whipping post, already stripped to her waist, her skirt lowered well past her navel, to receive 50 lashes and be branded for thievery.

If the whipper is right-handed, the brand will probably be placed on her left shoulder or under her left armpit because her right side will likely be covered with stripes.

She will be the fourth female to be publicly whipped this day. Three other bawdy wenches have gone before her....Barb, Eulalia and Kathy were their names. It's said that all three provided quite the spectacle....

Following that spectacle, an even bigger crowd jammed the streets on the next Market Day hoping for a repeat performance. And they were not to be disappointed. One by one, four young and ribald wenches—Linda, Lesley, Dorothy and Lilith—each one stripped to the waist and barefoot—was shackled to the end of a cart and then whipped through the streets. The sexy and stimulating show put on by these wenches equaled and maybe even exceeded the performance of the previous public whipping.
