I know for a fact that the austrian town of Fucking ended up changing its name because no matter what they did their signs kept getting stolen. They're now "Fugging" and still lose a sign or two every year.

I'm pretty sure than anyone prepared to go to the trouble of detaching the sign from its post and taking it will find disabling a tracking device to be completely trivial
