And one more successful release of the condemned female prisoner. The moment of stripping the condemned down and nailing her was the best for the sudden attack. Every soldiers and executioners were focused on her body and no one realized that few of the onlookers put on masks and got closer to the guards. They acted wise and the whole action was bloodless, which secured the less determined resistance and far less fierce pursuit after. One of the Roman legionnaires - more watchful than his colleagues - was knocked with the thick staff by the man in a Phrygian cap, but all the others were quickly disabled and disarmed, and the conspirators run away with the released prisoner deep to the wood, when they had hidden their horses. The day after they were far away and never were found nor recognized.

Starting from this week, according to the Apulia governer's decree, the escort, convoying a condemned and the civilian executioneers was extended to full eight man with an officer - so called custodia militaris - to let the condemned prisoners be rescued no more.

Scourging was a routine punishment for many disobedient slaves and not only the prelude for their crucifixion. If conducted carelessly, it could be as mortal as the latter. If properly done, it will be no less shameful and humiliating than any other form of the punishment.

Here we can see the scourged slave woman, untied from the pillory column, and simply left lying on the pavement in the middle of the forum - naked, covered with blood and half-conscious. Maybe she will recover, dress herself and return to her owner's villa. Or maybe she will die with trauma and blood loss and will be dragged to the nearest waste pit to be eaten by dogs or thrown to the river as a food for fishes. Who knows? And who cares...?
