Exactly! In the second half of the 19th century, it was a way of hypocritically circumventing censorship, like the orientalism that was fashionable at the time.

That's a bit from all times! If an artist wanted to create an artwork with a scantly clad and tied up damsel in distress, : depict the martyrdom of a saint!
And hang it in a church, so all can see it!

A pretty effective recruiting tool to get the unsaved into church, I would think.
There’s a church in Bogota , I want to say up on Montserrat, with a really horrific statue of Christ (lying down) covered in super realistic scourge marks and an expression of sheer agony on His face that I probably couldn’t stay away from if I lived in Bogota… but I don’t think I was the target audience of the 17th century sculptor! I do remember feeling extremely aroused by it and intensely embarrassed thinking everyone could tell that I was aroused and why. The mix of my masochism and being sacrilegious is a heady one.A pretty effective recruiting tool to get the unsaved into church, I would think.

Erotic but very "soft" (we are in 1968...). Epoxy is one of the first comic books for adults published without incurring the wrath of the censors. Four years earlier, Barbarella, although less explicit, had been banned from sale to minors!
