Well said, Andy! When men were crucified, the whole point of the ritualized whippings and nudity and the procession was to let everyone know who they were and how impotent they were compared to Rome. “Everyone! This is ____ son of _____. He thought he could rebel and commit crimes against Rome, but look at him now! Naked and helpless in our hands!”
For a woman, though, the raping and the nudity and the display on the cross served the opposite purpose: it made her anonymous again. For a woman to be individually sentenced to the cross, she must have done something beyond the pale of a woman’s expected behavior, especially in a patriarchal culture like Rome’s. Being raped, paraded and/or displayed naked, and pinned to a cross with a cornu in any one of her lower holes tells anyone who comes by, “It doesn’t matter who she is; this is just a woman. She was only ever fit for a woman’s role. Being fucked to death by Rome puts her back in her rightful place!”

Nailing the prisoner to the cross then raising it up in front of the crowd so they can fully see the condemned, naked individual is the most psychologically intense part of the whole process.

The clerk read out the charges to the large crowd assembled on Traitor’s Hill to witness this afternoon’s crucifixion.
“This criminal who goes by the name of Silvania is guilty of being an escaped slave girl, a rebel and a Christian. Therefor she is an enemy of the Senate and people of Rome. Soldiers you may proceed.”
