Today, May 18th, I will play the Joy Division albums, "Unknown Pleasures", "Closer", "Still", and numerous live albums, as I have tried to do every May 18th, as my little tribute to my favorite band. For on May 18, 1980 this band ceased to exist. It was on this day that lead singer and songwriter, Ian Curtis tragically decided to end his life. The remaining band members would regroup as New Order and conquer the world.
Joy Division changed my life like no other band. There are people who say their music is too dark and depressing, and warn not to listen to their music if you are depressed, or you might commit suicide, I am not one of them. I find the music dark, but strangely beautiful. To me, their music is a search for beauty in an otherwise cruel and cold world. There is a reason I placed their final album "Closer" number one on my top 20 favorite albums list that I posted back in February . Not only do I rate this album as number one in my book for artistic reasons, but it also is number one to me for personal reasons.
Back when I was in my early twenties I went through a period of depression. My girlfriend at the time, who suffered from epilepsy, had a fatal seizure one night. We had been on a date that night, and I drove her home, kissed her goodnight, and told her I would pick her up in the morning to go swimming. I returned the next day to find out she had died just a few hours after I dropped her off. I went through a period of depression, even had thoughts of suicide. Well, a few weeks later I received a call from the record store where I had ordered a copy of "Closer". I had to order it because it was an import. That album soothed my pain. I know it sounds stupid, but it did, and to this day it is my absolute favorite album. If I could only take one album to the proverbial " Island" this is the one I would take.
I had ordered "Closer" because I just loved their first album. I knew Ian had committed suicide just before the release of "Closer", but I just had to have a copy. I was hooked the very first time I placed the needle on side 1 of "Unknown Pleasures", and the first cords of "Disorder" started to play. I knew instantly I had stumbled onto something special. Sure, there are other bands that featured technically better musicians, but very few bands had the passion, the heart and soul, like this band did.
The music was real, heartfelt, soulful, with real passion in every song. I have everything they recorded, even numerous live bootlegs, and I can honestly state, there is not a bad song to be found. The only band close for me is the Doors. I literally have thousands of albums, from various genres, and my Joy Division collection is my most treasured collection. If I had to, I would part with everything except the Joy Division albums. This is no joke, if my house was on fire, I saving them. I have heard every song hundreds of times, and I still get excited to hear them again, I never get tired of them.
Well I know this is a long winded post, but since I love music so much, and I am sure there are other members who also share a great love for music, I just wanted to share my feelings about the great band Joy Division., on this day, May 18. A day I will always remember.
RIP Ian Curtis. Someday I will make the trip overseas and pay my proper respects to his resting place in Macclesfield Cemetery. It is at the top of my bucket list.

Good looking guitar Pp!
Thanks. There is a Les Paul Studio and a nice little Martin acoustic tucked away along with a small Cort that will pack on the motorcycle for camping trips that I claim as mine.

At last count there were 5 bass guitars, 7 electric guitars and 8 acoustics in the house along with a full drum kit.

Never been a fan but appreciate that you are. Three sons are all in bands. One lost a mate from a band his often gigs with at the weekend. Bloody sad to see talent gone too young in those circumstances.

Sorry to hear about your son losing a band mate. Yes it is sad to see young talent end to soon.

'Spindle' (I suspect this might have other meanings in Serbian ;))

When I look at you my hormones are alive
Because you are very hot
I breath hardly and I dream wildly
I need an anaesthetic

Don't be crazy
Don't be ashamed
Just tell me where to go
If you want through the wall-you got it

Your body is like a spindle, every look is touching my heart
It feels so sweet, the devils playing with me
Come on, you spindle, like you don't know I will fall for you
It feels so sweet, the devils playing with me

My desire is on fire
for your sweet lips
I breath hardly and I my dream wildly
I need an anaesthetic

Don't be crazy
Don't be ashamed
Just tell me where to go

This evening I've been listening to several Led Zeppelin albums, and I started to think of my favorite Zep tunes. I thought it would be fun to rank in order from 1 to 20 my favorite Led Zeppelin tunes.
The list:

1) When The Levee Breaks- Just a monster of a song, the drumming sounds like the thunder of the gods. Crank this up and peel paint off your walls.
2) Since I've Been a Loving You- Just a great tune, nuff said.
3) Stairway To Heaven
4) Dazed And Confused- The first cords are some of the most demonic......the soul of a woman was created below:devil:
5) The Immigrant Song
6) What Is And What Should Never Be
7) The Rover
8) Kashmir
9) Whole Lotta Love
10) How Many More Times
11) The Battle Of Evermore
12) No Quarter
13) Houses Of The Holy
14) Ten Years Gone
15) The Song Remains The Same
16) Achilles Last Stand
17) Night Flight
18) Babe I'm Gonna Leave You
19) In My Time Of Dying
20) In The Evening

It would be fun if other members would list in order their 20 favorite Led Zep tunes.

Other insane task: The 20 best songs of Led Zeppelin.

I'll do, but not today, despite its list not run very of my favorites.

Speak more than John Henry Bonham?

He was the Almighty of Drums.

A level below (any band or musician are a level below Led Zeppelin), has:

Ginger Baker - The Cream

Carl Palmer - Emerson, Lake and Palmer

Neil Peart - Rush

Don't know if I could pick a top 20. Your list is pretty hard to argue with. I think mine would include: "Black Dog", "Rock and Roll", "Misty Mountain Hop" & "Hey, Hey, What Can I Do?".

Saw that in the paper this morning. She was never a big success on this side of the pond, even though she ws from Detroit.
I found it more notable yesterday to see that Charlie Watts turned 74!
They are all getting old...pickled.

Funny thing I just looked at this thread while I was listening to 'Houses of the Holy'

I like Zep and 'Immigrant Song' was the first I heard of theirs. I can't put them in order but 'Stairway', 'Dazed and Confused' (some argue written about Tree), 'Kashmir' rank high...

...and Nataku's first three rank way up there too!!!

I have a special affinity to 'Stairway' just because of where I was parked at in my life... You can't do that now... there is a 'big box' strip mall...

But for timeless music I will take the best of Jim Steinman's songs (Meatloaf and Bonnie Tyler).

All-time favorite band is Mott the Hoople/Ian hunter but that is probably influenced by when I first heard them...

Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, and Tony Bennett weren't bad either...

...did I leave out James Brown???

Either, Nat King Cole, Cole Porter, Sammy Davis Jr.
